Kozhikode: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday launched the construction of the state’s longest tunnel project, a game-changing infrastructure development that will connect Kozhikode and Wayanad districts.
The ambitious tunnel, stretching through the Western Ghats, will link Anakkampoyil in Kozhikode with Meppadi in Wayanad, cutting the travel distance to just 22 km from the existing 42 km. Once completed, the project is expected to drastically reduce travel time and provide safer, faster, and more reliable connectivity between the districts.
Officials said the tunnel road would also ease congestion on the heavily used Thamarassery Ghat route, which often experiences traffic snarls and closures during landslides. The new link will not only benefit daily commuters but also boost tourism, trade, and emergency access between north Kerala districts.
The Chief Minister described the tunnel as a “transformative project” that will reshape the transport landscape of Malabar and improve connectivity with the high ranges.
