Kerala Braces for Heavy Rains as Monsoon and Low-Pressure System Intensify; Orange Alert in Key Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to experience days of intense rainfall as the northeast monsoon (Thulavarsham) gains strength and a low-pressure system forms over the southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep region by Sunday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy showers, along with isolated thunderstorms, across the state through the weekend — with Thursday and Friday expected to witness the most severe downpours.

In view of the forecast, an orange alert has been issued for Kottayam and Idukki on Thursday and Ernakulam on Friday, signaling the potential for very heavy rainfall in these districts.

A yellow alert has also been declared for multiple districts over the next five days, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Palakkad, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

With the monsoon strengthening and the low-pressure system intensifying, Kerala could face widespread rain, localized flooding, and strong winds in the coming days. Authorities have urged residents, especially those in hilly and coastal areas, to stay alert and follow safety advisories.

The IMD has also warned fishermen against venturing into the sea, as rough conditions and strong gusts are expected along the Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts.

As the skies open up once again, Kerala braces for another spell of monsoon fury — a reminder of nature’s unpredictable power during this season.
