Kerala Braces for Heavy Rainfall Till Friday; Orange Alert in Four Districts Today

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to witness continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next five days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned. The state has been placed under orange and yellow alerts in various districts, with rainfall warnings remaining in effect until Friday.

Today, an orange alert has been issued for Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, and Kozhikode, while all other districts remain on yellow alert.

Tuesday sees a yellow alert for all districts except Kannur and Kasaragod. On Wednesday, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki are under orange alert, with the rest on yellow alert. On Thursday, Kozhikode and Wayanad face orange alert, while Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod remain on yellow alert.

By Friday, the northern districts are expected to bear the brunt of the heavy rain. Kannur and Kasaragod are under orange alert, while Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad remain on yellow alert.

Meteorologists have warned that a new low-pressure system may form over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, potentially intensifying rainfall further across the state. The IMD forecasts that Kerala could experience heavy rains until October 24 due to this system.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution, particularly in areas prone to thunderstorms and strong winds, and have advised coastal and hilly residents to follow safety guidelines and avoid unnecessary travel.
