Kerala Braces for Downpour: Red Alert in 4 Districts, IMD Warns of Flash Floods and Landslides

Thiruvananthapuram: As a low-pressure system intensifies over the Bay of Bengal near the Odisha coast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern warning for Kerala: brace for continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

Red alerts have been sounded in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kannur, and Kasaragod, where rainfall may exceed 204.4 mm within 24 hours.

Meanwhile, ten districts — including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad — are under orange alert, with forecasts predicting 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rain in isolated areas.

The IMD has cautioned that the intensity of rainfall in a short span could lead to flash floods, landslides, lightning floods, and urban waterlogging, especially in vulnerable low-lying regions.

Disaster management authorities and the public have been advised to remain vigilant and take urgent precautionary measures to mitigate potential damage from the adverse weather conditions.
