Kannur: Kerala is raising a toast to its very own indigenous spirit — Kannur Feni. The Payyavoor Service Cooperative Bank has received the final green light to produce this unique cashew apple-based liquor, inspired by Goa’s iconic feni but crafted with a distinct Kannur twist.
The idea, first floated in 2016, was born from a vision to turn the region’s abundant cashew cultivation into a signature beverage. While the Kerala government granted official approval in 2022, the initiative faced bureaucratic hurdles until recently. Now, with tax rates finalized and all clearances nearly in place, production is expected to begin this December.
“We’re aiming for a market launch by the end of the year. Production costs per litre will be ₹200–₹250, and with 100% excise duty, retail prices are expected to fall between ₹500 and ₹600,” said TM Joshi, President of the cooperative bank spearheading the project. A four-acre plot in Kanjirakolly has already been reserved for the distillery.
Joshi, who proposed the concept back in the 1990s while serving as Payyavoor panchayat president, says the project will empower local farmers and create a new revenue stream. Only pure cashew apples—harvested between December and May—will be used in the distillation process, ensuring quality and authenticity.
Though “Kannur Feni” is the preferred name, legal hurdles remain. Goa holds a patent on the term “feni,” prompting the cooperative to consult legal experts before branding the product.
With its rich aroma and regional roots, Kannur’s own spirit is ready to pour new life into Kerala’s liquor scene — and give cashew farmers a reason to celebrate.
