Kochi: In a historic leap towards digital justice, the Kalpetta court has emerged as India’s first judicial district where all courts operate entirely without paper. The landmark paperless digital court system was inaugurated by Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant at a ceremony held at the High Court.
Highlighting the significance of the achievement, the Chief Justice said the large-scale reduction in paper usage marks a major transformation in the justice delivery system and could serve as a model for judicial districts across the country.
Under the new system, every stage of court proceedings — from pre-trial processes and recording of evidence to interim orders and final judgments — will be handled in a fully digital format. To ensure robust data security, the software powering the system has been developed directly by the High Court’s IT wing.
The digital transition is expected to speed up case handling by eliminating delays caused by physical file movement, while also significantly cutting down litigation costs.
The event was attended by Supreme Court Judge Justice Vikram Nath, Kerala High Court Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar, Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan, and Justice A.K. Jayashankaran Nambiar, all of whom hailed the initiative as a milestone in India’s judicial reforms.
