Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted the transformative role of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in empowering women, especially in rural areas. Launched in 2019, the mission aims to provide tap water connections to every rural household by 2024, significantly improving the quality of life and reducing the burden on women who traditionally fetch water for their families.
PM Modi underscored that women are at the core of JJM’s implementation. With women-led Village Water & Sanitation Committees (VWSCs) overseeing the planning and maintenance of water supply systems, the mission fosters both community engagement and female leadership. Over 12 lakh women have been trained to use Field Test Kits for monitoring water quality, enhancing their participation and technical skills in water resource management.
The mission also promotes better health outcomes by ensuring clean water access in schools and anganwadi centers, further supporting women and children. This initiative is driving rural development, social inclusion, and women empowerment, making it a “women-driven movement,” according to PM Modi.
