Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary Becomes India’s 100th Ramsar Site

India has achieved a significant environmental milestone with the designation of the Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary, also known as Surha Tal, as the country’s 100th Ramsar site.

Located in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, the wetland is known for its rich avifaunal biodiversity and serves as a habitat for numerous migratory and resident bird species.

The achievement reflects India’s continued commitment to the conservation of wetlands and the protection of natural ecosystems. Over the years, wetland conservation and restoration efforts have been strengthened through increased community participation, scientific interventions, innovation, and awareness programmes.

These initiatives are playing a vital role in preserving biodiversity, maintaining ecological balance, and ensuring a sustainable and greener future for coming generations.
