Intensifying Low-Pressure Triggers Heavy Rains in Kerala; Coastal Fishing Halted

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala continues to battle strengthening rainfall as a persistent low-pressure system impacts the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that isolated heavy showers will continue across the state, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds reaching up to 40 km/h. In view of the rough sea conditions, fishing has been strictly banned along the Kerala coast.

According to the IMD, certain areas may receive 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rainfall within 24 hours, categorizing it as heavy rain. Regions such as Sannidhanam, Pamba, and Nilakkal are expected to witness intense spells with thunder and lightning. Authorities have urged residents in hilly and landslide-prone areas to remain on high alert.

A low-pressure area currently lies over the Kanyakumari sea region, while another system is set to develop over the southwest Bay of Bengal on Saturday. This new system may intensify over the next 48 hours, potentially influencing Kerala’s weather for the next five days, bringing widespread thunderstorms and rain.

The IMD has also forecast isolated heavy rainfall on November 19 and 22, signalling the possibility of continued severe weather conditions across the state.
