New Delhi: India has recorded a sharp rise in daily Covid-19 cases, with the total number of active infections crossing the 5,000 mark, raising fresh concerns about the spread of the virus in multiple states.
According to official health data, Kerala continues to be the worst-affected state, reporting 192 new cases in the last 24 hours. The southern state has consistently topped the chart in daily infections over the past week, prompting state health authorities to reinforce surveillance and precautionary measures.
Following Kerala, Gujarat reported 107 new cases, while West Bengal registered 58, and the national capital Delhi saw 30 new infections. These numbers have brought renewed focus to urban centers and states with higher population density, where the virus appears to be spreading more rapidly.
Health officials across states have urged the public to remain cautious, especially in crowded public places and hospitals. Although hospitalization rates remain relatively low, authorities have emphasized the importance of mask-wearing in vulnerable environments, Covid-appropriate behavior, and vaccination boosters, particularly for the elderly and those with comorbidities.
The Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and is expected to issue updated guidelines if the upward trend in cases continues. Meanwhile, genome sequencing of samples is underway to rule out any potential new variants behind the rise in infections.
Public health experts have advised calm but caution, stating that while the situation is under control for now, early preventive action is critical to avoiding a wider outbreak.
