New Delhi: In a major boost to its military modernisation drive, India has approved a sweeping $40 billion defence procurement package, including the acquisition of additional Rafale fighter jets. The high-profile clearance comes just ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit, highlighting the growing strategic partnership between the two countries.
The advanced Rafale jets, manufactured by French aerospace giant Dassault Aviation, are among the world’s most sophisticated multi-role combat aircraft. Equipped with cutting-edge avionics, precision weapon systems, and superior combat capabilities, the new fleet is expected to significantly enhance the operational strength of the Indian Air Force and strengthen India’s maritime and aerial security posture.
Officials view the decision as a strategic step to bolster national defence amid evolving regional security challenges. The deal also reinforces defence and technology cooperation between India and France, with further collaboration likely to be discussed during high-level bilateral talks.
The landmark approval marks one of the largest defence investments in recent years, signalling India’s strong commitment to upgrading its armed forces while deepening global strategic alliances.
