“India an Important Partner”: US Lawmakers Move Resolution to End Trump-Era Tariffs

Washington: A group of US lawmakers has introduced a resolution seeking to end tariffs imposed during former President Donald Trump’s tenure, underscoring India’s importance as a key strategic and economic partner of the United States. The move reflects growing bipartisan concern over the continued use of trade restrictions that impact allies and global supply chains.

The resolution is being spearheaded by Representatives Deborah Ross, Marc Veasey and Raja Krishnamoorthi, and comes in the wake of a bipartisan measure passed in the US Senate to end similar tariffs on Brazil. Lawmakers have also sought to curb the President’s authority to invoke emergency powers to unilaterally raise import duties.

Supporters of the resolution argue that prolonged tariffs hurt American consumers, strain relationships with trusted partners like India, and undermine broader economic cooperation. The initiative signals a renewed push in Congress to reassess trade policies adopted under emergency provisions and to strengthen ties with countries seen as vital to US strategic and economic interests.
