Kochi: Prominent film producer Antony Perumbavoor, known for backing superstar Mohanlal’s much-anticipated film Empuraan, is under the scanner after the Income Tax Department issued a notice seeking detailed clarification on his financial dealings related to major films including Lucifer and Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham.
The move is part of a continued probe following extensive raids in 2022 at the offices and residences of top producers in Kerala. Antony’s production house, Aashirvad Cinemas, was among those searched. The current inquiry focuses on financial transactions from 2019 to 2022.
At the center of the scrutiny is a ₹2.5 crore overseas payment reportedly made by Antony to actor Mohanlal in Dubai in 2022. Authorities suspect possible tax evasion under the guise of overseas rights sales.
The notice, issued in the last week of March, coincided with a similar notice served to actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran. While the Empuraan movie is generating major buzz, officials have clarified that these legal actions are not related to the film’s ongoing controversies.
The Income Tax Department has underscored the need for greater transparency in international film deals, raising concerns about potential widespread tax evasion in the Malayalam film industry.
Antony has been directed to respond and submit all necessary documents before the end of this month.
