Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a Red Alert for Kannur and Kasaragod districts in northern Kerala for Wednesday, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours.
The alert signifies a grave risk of flash floods, landslides, and severe waterlogging, especially in low-lying and hilly areas. Residents have been urged to stay indoors, avoid non-essential travel, and follow safety instructions issued by the authorities.
District administrations have placed emergency response teams on high alert, and schools in vulnerable areas may remain closed. Fishermen have been strictly warned against venturing into the sea due to turbulent conditions and strong winds.
This warning comes amid a prolonged monsoon spell wreaking havoc across Kerala, with many regions already witnessing significant disruption. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) remains on standby for rapid deployment if required.
Authorities have appealed to the public to stay tuned to official weather updates and prepare for possible evacuation or emergency measures if conditions worsen.
