The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a renewed warning for heavy rainfall across Kerala, predicting intense showers to continue through Sunday. In response, a yellow alert has been sounded in eight districts today, urging residents to remain cautious.
Districts under yellow alert on Wednesday include Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur. For Sunday, the alert extends to Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Kozhikode.
The forecast points to isolated heavy rainfall, with expected downpours ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in a 24-hour period — enough to trigger localized flooding in vulnerable regions.
Meanwhile, the National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of potential sea erosion along Kerala’s coast due to the ‘Kallakkadal’ phenomenon — unexpected surge waves. Coastal regions may witness wave heights between 0.4 and 0.8 meters until 11:30 PM tonight, while Kanyakumari could see waves rising up to 1.0 meter.
Authorities have urged fishermen and coastal communities to remain vigilant and avoid venturing into the sea. With both heavy rain and sea conditions turning rough, caution is key to staying safe in the days ahead.
