NDA candidate B Gopalakrishnan is set to submit his nomination papers before the returning officer on Monday in the Guruvayur constituency, even as controversy continues over his recent remarks. However, sources now indicate that there is no obstacle to his contesting the elections.
The development comes amid a row triggered by Gopalakrishnan’s statement that a Hindu MLA is needed to protect the interests of Hindu believers in Guruvayur. The remarks drew criticism from political opponents, prompting complaints from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) and the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU).
Following the complaints, the returning officer has also filed a police complaint, and an investigation is expected to be conducted into the matter.
Responding to the controversy, Gopalakrishnan defended his statement, asserting that he had only spoken the truth. “What I said is 100 percent true. I stand by that truth. There is no change. If we talk about Hindus, it becomes controversial,” he said.
He further alleged that both the Indian National Congress and the CPI(M) had participated in events related to a Muslim religious scholar from Chavakkad, but did not show similar attention during the Mahakumbh Mela held on the banks of the Nila River.
“Those who want to create controversy will continue to do so,” he added. With the nomination process underway and an inquiry likely, the issue is expected to remain a key talking point in the Guruvayur constituency in the coming days.
