GST Council to Meet on September 3–4; Key Decision on Centre’s Two-Rate GST Proposal Likely

New Delhi: The GST Council will convene on September 3 and 4 to deliberate on crucial tax reforms, including the Central Government’s proposal to restructure the GST system into a simplified two-rate framework.

The Council is expected to examine the reports of various Groups of Ministers (GoMs), who were tasked with studying major aspects of the current indirect tax regime. A key highlight of the meeting will be discussions on whether to replace the existing multiple slab system with a more streamlined two-rate GST structure, a reform the Centre has been strongly advocating.

Officials suggest that the Council will also review measures to plug revenue leakages, improve compliance, and address state concerns on compensation.

If consensus is reached, this could mark one of the most significant overhauls of the GST regime since its rollout in 2017.
