GST Collection Hits ₹1.89 Lakh Crore in September, Surges Despite Rate Cuts

New Delhi: India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue soared to ₹1.89 lakh crore in September — the highest in four months and 9.1% higher than last year’s figures. This is also the ninth consecutive month that GST collections have stayed above the ₹1.8 lakh crore mark, signaling strong economic momentum.

Interestingly, fears that speculation over GST slab revisions might dent revenue proved unfounded. Despite expectations of a slowdown in automobile sales and other sectors, collections remained robust.

The surge comes after the government’s major tax reform last month, which simplified GST slabs by cutting them from four to two. The 28% and 12% rates were scrapped, while 18% and 5% slabs remain. The new structure, effective from September 22, aims to make the indirect tax system more efficient and business-friendly.
