Kerala’s rail network is poised for a major transformation after approval was granted to conduct surveys for seven high-speed rail corridor projects capable of supporting speeds up to 160 km per hour. Covering a total stretch of 849 kilometers, the proposed corridors could significantly enhance connectivity and reduce travel time across the state. Once the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are prepared and approved, additional clearances will be required from the state government, NITI Aayog, and the Union Finance Ministry. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told the Rajya Sabha that since approvals involve multiple stages, a definite timeline cannot be specified at present.
The Minister also highlighted progress on the Thiruvananthapuram–Kasaragod semi high-speed SilverLine project. The DPR prepared by Kerala Rail Development Corporation has been directed to be revised in accordance with updated technical standards. The revised plan must ensure broad-gauge integration with the Indian Railways network, parallel alignment of tracks where necessary, adequate drainage systems for yards and sections, incorporation of the Kavach safety system, environmental protection measures, and full electrification. If implemented, these projects are expected to usher in a new era of faster, safer, and more efficient rail travel in Kerala.
