Thiruvananthapuram: A high-level prison inquiry has revealed that notorious criminal Govindachamy acted alone in his daring jailbreak, with no evidence of assistance from either prison staff or fellow inmates. The detailed report, submitted by the Prison DIG to the DGP of Prisons, underscores serious security failures within the jail system.
Investigators found that Govindachamy, known for his violent behavior and troublemaking, had minimal interaction with other inmates, making it unlikely that he received any internal support. The report also highlights gross negligence on the part of prison officials, particularly the Assistant Jail Superintendent on night duty, who failed to maintain adequate oversight.
Remarkably, the report points out that Govindachamy possesses extraordinary strength in his left arm—strong enough to overpower others physically—raising questions about how he managed to cut through prison bars undetected. Officials have called for a deeper probe into the exact method used in the escape.
Adding to the security concerns, Govindachamy had earlier requested cloth to ward off rats in his cell—a request reportedly denied by prison authorities. Investigators now suspect he obtained cloth from remand prisoners during their laundry routines to aid in his escape. Compounding the issue, the report cites that CCTV monitoring was severely compromised due to acute staff shortages at the time of the incident.
