Fire in Medical College ICU Area; 32 Patients Shifted

A fire broke out at Government Medical College Hospital Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, causing panic among patients and staff. The incident occurred on the first floor of the multi-specialty block.

According to officials, the fire started from a ventilator and spread to a bed, leading to thick smoke in the area as plastic and other materials caught fire. The initial assessment suggests that a short circuit may have caused the fire.

As a precaution, 32 patients from the nearby surgical ICU were quickly evacuated and shifted to another ICU. Hospital staff were also moved to safety. The Fire and Rescue Services reached the spot and brought the fire under control. Authorities said the fire did not spread to other parts of the hospital.

V. V. Rajesh, Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, said the oxygen supply in the affected area was cut off immediately to prevent further danger. However, smoke spread quickly as the room was closed. Doctors confirmed that all patients were safely shifted and no injuries have been reported. Further investigation is underway to confirm the exact cause of the fire.
