Deep Depression Gathers Strength; Rain Set to Return to Kerala, Yellow Alert in Two Districts

A weather system over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression, raising the likelihood of rainfall across Kerala from tomorrow, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

In view of the possibility of heavy rain, a Yellow Alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts on Saturday.

The deep depression, which formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean, is expected to strengthen further into a very deep depression within the next 24 hours. Over the following 48 hours, it is likely to move west-northwestwards towards the southwest Bay of Bengal, according to the IMD.

Under the influence of this system, Kerala may receive light to moderate rainfall on January 9, 10, and 11. The districts under Yellow Alert could witness isolated spells of heavy rain, defined as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rainfall within 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the IMD has stated that fishing activities can continue as usual today along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts, as no adverse sea conditions are expected.
