Cyclonic System Brewing Over Bay of Bengal to Drench Kerala; IMD Issues Five-Day Yellow Alert for Heavy Rain

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to face another spell of intense rainfall as a new cyclonic circulation forms over the northern Bay of Bengal around October 10, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather system is expected to trigger widespread heavy showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across the state over the next five days.

A well-marked low-pressure area currently lies over the east-central Arabian Sea and is likely to move east-southeastward, weakening into a depression within 12 hours. Simultaneously, another cyclonic circulation persists over the Kanyakumari region and nearby areas at around 1.5 km above mean sea level, further fueling unstable weather conditions.

Under the influence of these systems, Kerala will experience isolated heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and winds reaching 30–40 kmph. The IMD has sounded Yellow Alerts across several districts through the week:

  • Wednesday: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, and Wayanad
  • Thursday: Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad, and Kannur
  • Friday: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur
  • Saturday & Sunday: Palakkad and Malappuram

The IMD classifies heavy rainfall as between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours. Authorities have urged residents, particularly those in hilly and coastal regions, to stay vigilant and follow official weather advisories to ensure safety amid the expected downpours.
