Cyclone Ditwah Nears Coast: Kerala Braces for Rain, Rough Sea & High Waves

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to experience continued isolated rainfall as Cyclone Ditwah strengthens over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Idukki districts, warning of isolated heavy rain ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

Cyclone Ditwah Intensifies Near Sri Lanka Coast

A severe low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the Sri Lankan coastline has intensified into Cyclone Ditwah. The cyclone is moving north–northwest and is likely to approach the northern Tamil Nadu–Puducherry and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts by the morning of November 30. Under its influence, Kerala will continue to receive isolated rainfall till November 29, as per IMD projections.

High Wave Alert Issued for Kerala’s Coastline

Coastal regions of Kerala are on alert as a high-wave phenomenon triggers warnings of sea incursion and rough sea conditions until 11:30 PM today. The National Centre for Coastal Research reports that 0.4 to 0.8 meter-high waves may lash the following regions:

  • Thiruvananthapuram: Kappil to Pozhiyoor
  • Kollam: Alappad to Edava
  • Kozhikode: Chombala FH to Ramanattukara

Along the Kanyakumari coast, wave heights could rise to 0.7 to 1 meter. Fishermen and coastal residents have been urged to remain vigilant and avoid risky activities near the shore.

Fishermen Advisory: Fishing Ban Extended

A strict fishing ban has been enforced along the Kerala–Lakshadweep coasts till November 30, owing to strong winds blowing at 40–50 kmph, occasionally reaching 60 kmph.
Rough sea conditions and strong winds are also expected in:

  • Southern Kerala coast
  • Lakshadweep–Maldives region
  • Southwest Bay of Bengal
  • Gulf of Mannar, Kanyakumari coast & Puducherry coast (till December 1)

Fishermen operating near the south Andhra Pradesh coast have been instructed to return to land immediately.

Additionally, no fishing activity is permitted in:

  • Central West Bay of Bengal till December 1
  • Southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep region, and Kerala coast till November 30
