The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) has confirmed P. K. Shyamala as its candidate from Taliparamba for the upcoming elections. CPM Kannur district secretary K. K. Ragesh said the decision was based on Shyamala’s organisational work and experience. He clarified that family relations were not a factor in selecting candidates and noted that relatives of leaders have contested in the past as well.
The announcement comes amid internal tensions within the party. Senior leader T. K. Govindan recently left the CPM after making allegations against M. V. Govindan. Responding to the allegations, Ragesh said that Govindan himself had earlier suggested his name for consideration but is now unhappy after not getting the seat. He also criticised Govindan, saying the reaction was due to disappointment.
Meanwhile, T.K. Govindan has alleged that the party acted unfairly in favour of P.K. Shyamala. He has now decided to contest the election from Taliparamba as an independent candidate. The developments have brought attention to internal differences within the CPM in the Kannur district.
