India is witnessing a fresh spike in COVID-19 infections, with active cases crossing the 4,000 mark as of June 3, 2025. The total number of active cases now stands at 4,026, an increase of 512 cases in just 24 hours.
Kerala remains the epicenter, accounting for more than 35% of the national caseload, with 1,416 new infections reported in a single day. Other major contributors include Maharashtra (494), Gujarat (397), Delhi (393), West Bengal (372), and Karnataka (311). Combined, these six states are responsible for over 72% of India’s current COVID-19 burden.
In the same 24-hour window, five COVID-related deaths were recorded — two in Maharashtra and one each in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. Most fatalities involved elderly individuals with pre-existing health issues such as diabetes and heart disease.
Health experts attribute the rise to new highly transmissible Omicron sub-variants like JN.1 and NB.1.8.1, though they emphasize that the severity remains low, with most infections being mild.
Kerala has swiftly stepped up preventive actions. Dedicated COVID wards and ICUs have been set up, particularly in monsoon relief camps where infection risk is elevated. Strict testing, isolation protocols, and public health guidelines are being enforced.
Authorities across India are urging citizens to remain cautious, adhere to basic safety measures like mask-wearing and hand hygiene, and avoid unnecessary hospital visits. Vaccination drives are also being reinforced to curb the spread.
As India navigates this unexpected COVID-19 uptick, vigilance and preparedness remain key to controlling the surge.
