Consumer Court Orders Compensation Against Guruvayur Devaswom Over Deficient Room Facilities

Thrissur: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Thrissur, has ruled in favour of a complainant who alleged that a room with inadequate facilities was provided at a Devaswom-run tourist home in Guruvayur.

The complaint was filed by Kozhikode-based advocate P. Chathukkutti against the administrator of the Guruvayur Devaswom.

According to the petition, Chathukkutti had rented a room at Panchajanyam Tourist Home in Guruvayur for ₹600 and arrived with his wife and daughter. Upon entering the room, he found it unsuitable for stay. The toilet lacked a seat cover on the western closet. Following his complaint, another room was allotted, but it too allegedly had several shortcomings, including a bathroom door that could not be locked and the absence of clothes hangers.

The complainant alleged that despite repeated complaints, the deficiencies were not rectified. He further claimed that the rooms were being maintained in an unsatisfactory condition.

After considering the case, the Consumer Commission comprising President C.T. Sabu and members Sreeja S. and R. Ram Mohan found deficiency in service on the part of the opposite party. The commission ordered the Devaswom to pay ₹15,000 as compensation and ₹5,000 towards litigation costs to the complainant.

Advocate A.D. Benny appeared for the complainant in the case.
