Thiruvananthapuram: A statewide coastal hartal called by the Kerala Fisheries Coordination Committee against offshore mining has severely impacted fishing activities across Kerala. The protest, backed by various trade unions from the fisheries sector and major political parties, including the ruling CPI(M), has led to a significant halt in operations in several coastal regions.
Fishermen and related organizations have raised concerns over the environmental and economic impact of offshore mining, claiming it threatens marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of thousands of fishing families. Many boats remained anchored as fishers refrained from venturing into the sea, responding to the hartal call.
Protesters have demanded an immediate halt to offshore mining activities and stronger policies to protect coastal communities. The hartal witnessed widespread participation, with rallies and demonstrations held in major fishing hubs. Authorities have deployed additional police personnel in sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
The Kerala Fisheries Coordination Committee has warned of intensified protests if their demands are not met, urging the state and central governments to take immediate action against offshore mining practices.
