Bullet Trains for Bengaluru: High-Speed Links to Chennai and Hyderabad Announced; Mysuru Left Out

New Delhi: In a bold infrastructure vision unveiled in the Union Budget, the Centre has announced seven high-speed “growth connectors” with a staggering investment of ₹16 lakh crore, positioning Bengaluru as a major hub in India’s future bullet train network.

As part of the plan, bullet train corridors connecting Bengaluru with Chennai and Hyderabad have been proposed, promising to drastically cut travel time and strengthen economic and industrial ties across South India. The project is expected to boost mobility for the IT sector, trade, and business travel.

However, the announcement has also sparked debate, as Mysuru has been excluded from the current list of high-speed rail routes, disappointing residents and regional leaders who had hoped the heritage city would be part of the ambitious plan.

According to official indications, while the budget outlines the vision and funding framework, actual groundwork for the projects is likely to begin only after 2027, following feasibility studies, land acquisition, and detailed planning.

The “growth connectors” are envisioned as next-generation transport corridors integrating high-speed rail and multimodal infrastructure to accelerate economic growth and regional connectivity.

While Bengaluru’s inclusion marks a major milestone, demands are already growing for Mysuru’s inclusion in future phases, as the government leaves the door open for expansion based on demand and viability.

The announcement signals one of India’s largest long-term infrastructure pushes, underscoring a commitment to faster, smarter, and more connected urban corridors.
