Kochi: In a surprising move, businessman and philanthropist Boby Chemmanur has chosen to remain in jail despite being granted bail by the Kerala High Court on January 14, 2025. His decision is a gesture of solidarity with prisoners who remain behind bars due to legal and procedural obstacles.
Chemmanur, held in judicial custody for six days, informed his legal team that he would stay in jail as a protest against the systemic delays preventing inmates from securing their rightful release.
This unexpected decision disappointed many of his supporters who had gathered outside the jail in anticipation of his release. It remains unclear when Chemmanur will decide to walk free.
The Kerala High Court granted him bail after police confirmed they no longer needed his custody. The case was filed after actress Honey Rose accused Chemmanur of making derogatory remarks about her during an incident four months ago.
By choosing to stay imprisoned, Chemmanur has spotlighted the challenges many prisoners face in navigating the legal system, drawing attention to the need for reforms in the justice and penal systems.
