New Delhi: Kerala’s railway infrastructure is set for a major upgrade as the Centre has cleared rail projects worth ₹487.73 crore, paving the way for faster trains, improved freight movement, and fewer delays. The approved projects include doubling of the Alappuzha railway line and the long-awaited Palakkad railway bypass, both expected to significantly enhance rail operations across the state.
The Alappuzha line doubling project will ease congestion on one of Kerala’s busiest rail corridors, enabling the introduction of more passenger and express services. With increased track capacity, trains are expected to run more punctually, improving connectivity for commuters and long-distance travellers alike.
Meanwhile, the Palakkad railway bypass is designed to decongest the crucial Palakkad Junction. The bypass will allow several long-distance trains to avoid time-consuming reversals at the junction, resulting in shorter travel times, better fuel efficiency, and smoother train operations. The project is also expected to provide a strong boost to freight traffic, benefiting industries and trade in the region.
Railway authorities say the projects will strengthen Kerala’s logistics network while offering passengers a faster and more reliable travel experience. The approvals underline the Centre’s continued focus on modernising rail infrastructure and expanding capacity on high-density routes.
Once technical and administrative procedures are completed, work on the projects is expected to begin in phases. On completion, these rail upgrades are set to deliver lasting benefits to Kerala’s transport system and overall economic growth.
