The Adani Group has announced plans to establish India’s largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Khavda, Gujarat, marking the company’s major entry into large-scale energy storage. The project will have a capacity of 1,126 MW / 3,530 MWh, making it not only the largest in India but also one of the world’s biggest single-location energy storage projects.
According to the company’s statement, the facility — comprising over 700 BESS containers — is expected to be commissioned by March next year. The new system will be part of the Khavda Renewable Energy Park, which is already recognized as the world’s largest renewable energy project.
The Adani Group explained that the BESS will play a crucial role in enhancing grid reliability, providing backup power, and making renewable energy more dependable. By storing energy produced from solar and wind sources, the system will ensure a steady supply of electricity even when generation is low, thereby reducing dependence on fossil fuels and cutting electricity costs.
The upcoming system will use advanced lithium-ion battery technology, integrated with smart energy management systems. Once operational, the facility will be able to store up to 3,530 MWh of clean energy.
Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani described energy storage as “the cornerstone of a sustainable renewable energy future.” Gautam Adani added that the group plans to commission an additional 15 GWh of storage capacity by March 2027, with a long-term goal of achieving 50 GWh of total capacity within the next five years.
The project is expected to significantly strengthen India’s clean energy infrastructure, support grid stability, and accelerate the nation’s transition toward a carbon-neutral future.
