Kerala on Alert as Another Amoebic Brain Fever Death Reported in Thiruvananthapuram

Kerala has reported yet another death due to amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare and often fatal brain infection. The latest victim, 78-year-old Hubsa Beevi from Vavara Ambalam, Pothencode, passed away while undergoing treatment at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.

This marks the second death in the state capital within 48 hours. Hubsa Beevi had developed a fever two weeks ago and was initially treated at private hospitals. When her condition worsened, she was admitted to the Medical College Hospital, where tests confirmed amoebic brain fever. Despite intensive care, her health declined rapidly due to kidney failure and other complications.

Just a day earlier, an 18-year-old girl from Kulathoor had also died from the same infection, underscoring growing health concerns in the region.

According to health authorities, eight people have lost their lives this month alone to the infection, and 47 confirmed cases have been reported statewide. Officials have urged the public to remain vigilant, especially when bathing in contaminated or stagnant water — a known source of the amoeba responsible for this life-threatening disease.
