Supreme Court Orders CBI Probe into Karur Stampede Tragedy; Retired Justice Ajay Rastogi to Lead 3-Member Oversight Panel

New Delhi: In a decisive move to ensure accountability and transparency, the Supreme Court of India has ordered a CBI investigation into the Karur stampede tragedy, which claimed several lives earlier this year. The apex court also announced the formation of a three-member supervisory committee to closely monitor the progress of the probe.

A Bench led by Justice J.K. Maheswari appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi as the head of the supervisory panel, which will also include a retired High Court judge and a senior police officer to be nominated by the CBI Director.

The Court underscored that the investigation must be carried out “swiftly, transparently, and without bias,” ensuring justice for the victims and accountability for any administrative lapses.

The Karur stampede, which occurred during a public distribution event in Tamil Nadu, drew national attention and criticism over lapses in crowd management. Although the state government had set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT), concerns over its impartiality led to demands for a CBI probe.

With this order, the Supreme Court has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding justice and restoring public trust in the investigation process surrounding one of Tamil Nadu’s most tragic incidents in recent times.
