Bay of Bengal Deep Depression Triggers Heavy Rains in Kerala; Orange Alert in Four Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: A deep depression brewing over the Bay of Bengal has intensified rainfall across Kerala, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue fresh alerts.

Four northern districts — Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod — are under orange alert for very heavy rainfall, while Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram remain on yellow alert.

The weather system is likely to make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh–Odisha coast by Saturday morning, with Kerala bracing for more widespread showers in the coming days, especially across central and northern regions.

On Friday, southern and central Kerala witnessed torrential downpours, with Thiruvananthapuram and Neyyattinkara recording over 150 mm of rain. Waterlogging was reported in several low-lying areas, while five shutters of the Aruvikkara dam had to be opened.

The IMD has also warned fishermen against venturing into the sea along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts till Sunday, citing rough weather conditions.
