Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Tourism Department has issued a stern warning to homestays across the state, stating that those operating without proper approval or license will face immediate closure.
The department emphasized that many unregistered homestays are functioning illegally, putting both tourists and the reputation of Kerala’s tourism sector at risk. To curb this, inspections will be intensified in major tourist destinations including Munnar, Wayanad, Alappuzha, Fort Kochi, and Kovalam.
Officials pointed out that homestays must adhere to the guidelines set by the Tourism Department, including safety standards, hygiene, and quality of service, in order to be recognized. Only registered units will be eligible for government promotions, subsidies, and inclusion in official tourism campaigns.
“Unapproved operators not only deny the government its due revenue but also jeopardize tourist safety. Strict action, including closure, will be taken against violators,” a senior tourism official said.
The department has urged homestay owners to complete their registration and approval process at the earliest to avoid penalties.
