The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has announced a ₹176–179 crore project to replace hazardous bare overhead power lines with insulated aerial bunched cables (ABC) and underground cabling in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Kozhikode. The decision comes in the wake of several electrical accidents and growing public concern over exposed wires endangering pedestrians and motorists.
Under the plan, both low-tension and high-tension lines along busy urban corridors—especially MG Roads—will be upgraded to modern systems, including armoured underground cables, aerial bundled conductors, and ring-main units. Feeder pillars will also be installed to improve consumer connections and system efficiency.
The estimated cost breakdown includes ₹78.1 crore for Thiruvananthapuram, ₹74.54 crore for Kochi, and ₹26.3 crore for Kozhikode. The initiative promises improved safety, reduced power losses, and a cleaner cityscape, while aligning with broader Smart City infrastructure goals.
Construction is set to begin soon, marking a significant shift toward a safer and more reliable urban electricity network across Kerala.
