Kerala Govt to Offer Subsidised Coconut Oil for Onam: 2 Litres Per Ration Card via Supplyco

The Kerala government has announced that Supplyco will sell up to 2 litres of coconut oil per ration card at a subsidised rate. Priced at ₹349 per litre (₹179 for 500 ml), the move comes as part of a broader initiative to curb rising living costs during the festive season. Non-subsidised variants will also be sold at reduced prices—₹429 per litre and ₹219 per half-litre.

This is part of Supplyco’s mega Onam market strategy, with 10-day fairs in district headquarters and 5-day fairs in assembly constituencies, offering essential goods like cooking oil, rice, pulses, and branded items at below-MRP prices. The state-level fair will kick off on August 25 in Thiruvananthapuram, inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and will run till September 4, coinciding with Uthradam.

To further support families, the government will distribute over 6 lakh free Onam kits—each containing 15 essential items including half a litre of coconut oil, sugar, dal, ghee, spices, and tea—to AAY cardholders and welfare institutions between August 18 and September 2.

Amid soaring coconut oil prices, which recently crossed ₹450 per litre and are expected to go even higher, this initiative aims to make Onam more affordable and inclusive for all households across Kerala.
