Kerala Braces for Torrential Rain: Red Alert in 5 Districts, Schools Shut Across Affected Regions

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts extremely heavy rainfall in multiple parts of the state today. Red Alerts have been issued in five districts, Orange Alerts in four, and Yellow Alerts across the remaining regions.

The districts under Red Alert today include Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Meanwhile, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad are on Orange Alert, and Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam remain on Yellow Alert.

The IMD warns that heavy rains are likely to persist across the state tomorrow as well, with Red Alerts already issued for Kannur and Kasaragod. Strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h are expected, prompting authorities to ban fishing activities due to dangerous sea conditions.

Amid the extreme weather warning, educational institutions in three districts have declared a holiday today. All schools and professional colleges will remain shut in Wayanad and Kasaragod, while in Kannur, the closure applies only to schools.

In addition, the northern region of Kozhikode is facing intense rainfall. As a precaution, the District Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, in Vatakara Taluk.

Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and follow official updates as the state navigates through the heavy monsoon spell.
