Kochi has been declared the cleanest city in Kerala in the 9th edition of the Swachh Survekshan 2024, India’s largest annual cleanliness survey conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
The city saw an extraordinary improvement in its national ranking, jumping from 416th position in 2023 to 50th place in 2024. This dramatic rise highlights Kochi’s significant strides in urban sanitation, waste management, and public hygiene practices over the past year.
The Swachh Survekshan evaluates cities based on various cleanliness parameters, including waste segregation, citizen feedback, sanitation infrastructure, and innovation in solid waste management. Kochi’s improved performance reflects the efforts of the municipal corporation, civic bodies, and citizen participation.
Officials credited the achievement to better waste segregation practices, increased awareness campaigns, and infrastructure upgrades, including more waste collection vehicles and public toilets.
This recognition not only places Kochi at the top in Kerala but also signals its emergence as a national model for urban cleanliness and sustainability.
