The Kerala Education Department has approved the inclusion of a new chapter on the constitutional powers and responsibilities of state Governors in the Class 10 Social Science textbook. The lesson, titled “Democracy: An Indian Experience,” also incorporates contemporary topics such as the Emergency period, the Supreme Court’s verdict on electoral bonds, and resort politics—making the subject more relevant to current affairs. This update is part of a broader textbook revision for Classes II, IV, VI, VIII, and X, with the new editions set to reach students before Onam.
The move, approved by the curriculum panel chaired by Education Minister V. Sivankutty, comes at a time of heightened tensions between the state government and the Raj Bhavan—especially over recent controversies like the display of a Bharat Mata portrait at official events. While the state positions this as a push for civic awareness, observers see political undertones. Nonetheless, the initiative marks Kerala’s bold step toward empowering students with a deeper understanding of India’s democratic and constitutional structure.
