Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has scrapped its earlier proposal to offer free rides to passengers if auto-rickshaw meters were found faulty. The decision comes amid opposition from auto unions and concerns over practical implementation.
The initial plan aimed to curb fare manipulation by ensuring that drivers maintained properly functioning meters. However, auto-rickshaw associations argued that technical glitches and calibration issues could unfairly penalize them.
Officials now plan to explore alternative measures to regulate fares and ensure passenger rights while addressing concerns raised by the drivers. The transport department is expected to introduce stricter monitoring and penalties instead of the free-ride policy.
