Tragic Mumbai Boat Collision Claims 13 Lives; PM Modi Expresses Condolences

A tragic maritime accident unfolded off the Mumbai coast when an Indian Navy speedboat, undergoing engine trials, collided with a passenger ferry named Neelkamal, bound for the historic Elephanta Caves. The collision caused the ferry to capsize, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 13 lives, including three Navy personnel. Despite the calamity, 114 passengers were successfully rescued, with operations still underway to find any remaining missing persons.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his grief over the incident, saying, “The boat mishap in Mumbai is saddening. Condolences to the bereaved families.” He also announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and ₹50,000 for those injured.

A formal inquiry has been launched by the Indian Navy to determine the cause of the accident. Initial findings point to a potential engine malfunction that caused the naval speedboat to lose control during the trial run.

The Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries A.D., are a major tourist attraction accessible by ferry from the Gateway of India. This accident has raised fresh concerns about maritime safety protocols in the region.

Rescue efforts were supported by the Navy, Marine Police, Coast Guard, and local fishermen. Four Navy helicopters and multiple rescue vessels were deployed to aid in the search and recovery mission.

Authorities are now focused on enhancing safety measures to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
