Chennai: Heavy rains lashed Chennai and neighbouring districts as the northeast monsoon became active in Tamil Nadu, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said on Sunday.
Several parts of the city witnessed intense rainfall on Saturday night, inundating low-lying areas and disrupting traffic.
North Chennai bore the initial brunt of the downpour, recording 6 cm to 10 cm of rainfall in less than an hour.
The heavy showers marked the first spell of the northeast monsoon in the region, bringing significant rainfall to Chennai and its surrounding areas.
