Thiruvananthapuram: Former Kerala Chief Minister and opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan has urged the Centre and the Kerala government to take steps to ensure the safety of students from Kerala studying at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab following violent incidents on the campus.
Vijayan said the situation at the university needs to be viewed seriously and called for arrangements to ensure the safety and safe travel of students from Kerala.
The LPU campus witnessed protests and violence on Sunday following allegations that an outsider had sexually assaulted a female student on the university premises. The protests reportedly escalated, with students allegedly damaging property and blocking a section of the New Delhi-Amritsar highway near the campus.
In a Facebook post, Vijayan alleged that the university management and police attempted to suppress the students’ protest over the alleged sexual assault. He also alleged the involvement of people associated with the Sangh Parivar in efforts to control the protest.
Vijayan called on the authorities to intervene and ensure that students from Kerala are protected and provided with necessary assistance amid the unrest.
