Tension prevailed at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab’s Phagwara on Sunday after students staged protests over allegations that an outsider raped a female student on the university campus.
The protest later turned violent, with students allegedly vandalising university property, blocking a national highway and clashing with police personnel. Officials said several police officers were injured after protesters pelted stones and attacked police vehicles.
A large police contingent led by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M. F. Farooqui subsequently entered the university campus to bring the situation under control.
Authorities said the situation has since been brought under control. Classes at the university have been suspended amid the unrest, and an FIR has been registered in connection with the incident and the subsequent violence.
