NLC India Expands Energy Portfolio to Strengthen Energy Security

New Delhi: NLC India Limited (NLCIL), a Navratna company under the Ministry of Coal, is expanding its energy portfolio as India works towards its 2047 development goals.

The company currently has a power generation capacity of 8,405 MW and mining capacity of 59.10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). It plans to increase its mining capacity to 104.35 MTPA by 2030 and 115.85 MTPA by 2047.

NLCIL is also developing high-efficiency thermal power projects, including the 1,980 MW Ghatampur project, 2,400 MW Talabira project and 4,000 MW Machhakatta project. It is commissioning First Mile Connectivity rail systems with a combined capacity of 63.5 MTPA to improve coal transportation efficiency.

On the renewable energy front, NLCIL aims to expand its operational renewable portfolio from around 1.8 GW to more than 10 GW by 2030, with a target of 32.7 GW by 2047. The company is also developing battery energy storage and pumped storage projects in several states.

NLCIL is diversifying into emerging clean-energy technologies, including a 4 MW solar-powered green hydrogen plant at Neyveli and carbon capture technologies in collaboration with IIT Madras. It is also pursuing strategic mineral exploration in India and overseas.

The company said these initiatives are aimed at strengthening India’s energy security while supporting the transition towards lower-carbon energy and greater self-reliance
