Kathmandu: Nepal observed a national day of mourning on Monday, 13 days after devastating flash floods in Rasuwa and neighbouring areas claimed more than 1,340 lives, marking one of the country’s deadliest natural disasters in recent years.
Nearly 5,000 people are still reported missing, including 589 foreign nationals, following the disaster that struck on August 26 after an ice-rock avalanche in the high Himalayan region triggered massive flash floods.
The disaster caused widespread destruction in Rasuwa, which borders China, as well as Nuwakot, Dhading and other areas along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.
The Nepal government declared September 7 a national day of mourning to honour those killed in the catastrophe and remember the communities affected by the widespread loss of life and destruction of infrastructure.
