Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has recorded a 21 per cent deficit in rainfall during the three-month period from June to August this year, according to weather reports.
The state normally receives around 1,735.2 mm of rainfall during this period.
However, Kerala has received only 1,365.4 mm so far this year.Weather experts have attributed the lower rainfall to the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, which can affect monsoon patterns.
Wayanad and Idukki recorded the highest rainfall deficits among the districts. Wayanad witnessed a 51 per cent shortfall, the highest in the state, while Idukki recorded a 45 per cent deficit.
Other districts also experienced significant declines, with Kollam recording a 30 per cent deficit and Thrissur 27 per cent.
The prolonged rainfall deficit could have an impact on agriculture and groundwater availability in the state, experts said.
