Japan Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi Meets PM Modi, Discusses Defence Cooperation

New Delhi: Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, who is on an official visit to India, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, with the two sides discussing ways to further strengthen bilateral defence and security cooperation.

During the meeting, Modi recalled his recent discussions with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during her visit to India for the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in July 2026. He welcomed the continued momentum in defence cooperation between the two countries and stressed the importance of the partnership in promoting peace, stability and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

Modi also highlighted opportunities for Japanese companies and start-ups to work with Indian firms in the defence sector, particularly in co-development and co-production under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Koizumi briefed the Prime Minister on the progress of bilateral defence cooperation and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to further deepening its strategic ties with India.
